Is San Carlos, Antioquia safe?

Yes. San Carlos is one of Colombia's reference towns for post-conflict rebuilding: its displaced families came home, it has had steady tourism for more than a decade, and it is a regular weekend destination for families from Medellín. You drive in through the town of Granada, the road is paved, and if you travel by day you arrive in daylight.

How do I get there from Medellín? Do I need a 4x4?

It is about a 3-hour drive from Medellín, and you do not need a 4x4. Come through Granada, not through Guatapé. The road is paved all the way to San Carlos, and the last 7 minutes are gravel but well maintained. A regular car handles it, and so does a motorcycle.

Driving from Medellín. Take the Medellín to Bogotá highway. About 1,000 feet before the Cocorná toll booth, turn left toward Granada; the turn is at the Valle de María restaurant. Drive through Granada and then through San Carlos. As you leave town, take the climb on the concrete-strip road toward Vereda Cañaveral. Seven minutes up, on your left, is the entrance to Silvery.

Coming from Guatapé. You do not need to drive back to Medellín or get on the highway: from Guatapé the better route is through San Rafael. Download the map first, because that stretch has little cell service.

From José María Córdova airport. Take the connector road to the highway and follow the directions above.

By bus. Direct buses to San Carlos leave from Medellín's Terminal del Norte, with Coonorte or Transoriente. From the main square in San Carlos, a motorcycle taxi gets you to Silvery in about 15 minutes for roughly COP $25,000; the drivers know the way to Vereda Cañaveral. We can also arrange private transport for you.

Before you leave. Download the Google Maps area for offline use, especially if your carrier is not Claro. And take the gravel stretch slowly, more so after rain.

What does it cost and what is included?

From COP $603,950 per night for two, tax included, Sunday through Thursday. Each additional guest is COP $90,000 per night. How many people fit in one cabin?

Four adults, or two adults and three children under 12. There is a queen bed on the main floor (1.60 × 1.90 m) and a double mattress in the loft (1.40 × 1.90 m). The base rate covers two people; each additional guest is COP $90,000 per night.

Can I bring my dog?

Yes, your dog is welcome in all three cabins, for COP $90,000 per stay, not per night. Bring their bed and bowl: we provide the water and the room to roam.

Is there cell service and internet?

Claro is the only carrier with good service at Silvery. On any other carrier, download your maps for offline use before you leave and plan on having no signal. There is free Starlink Wi-Fi in the main house and it is fast; the cabins have no Wi-Fi, and that is part of the experience.

Does it get hot? Is there air conditioning?

There is no air conditioning and you will not need it. Each level of the cabin has a tower fan, and at night it cools down enough to sleep under a blanket. In the loft we leave a basket with two extra blankets in case you want them.

What is there to eat? Is there a restaurant?

There is no restaurant, and that is the point rather than a shortcoming. Your cabin has a full kitchen, and breakfast ingredients from local producers are included. For the evening we offer two kits, ordered ahead of your stay.

Pizza kit with Spanish wine. Small, COP $159,000: one house-made pizza and a bottle of Spanish wine, red or white. Full, COP $219,000: two pizzas and a bottle of Spanish wine.

Eleven toppings: ham and cheese; Hawaiian; BBQ pork; Dalí (pesto, caramelized apple, blue cheese sauce, mozzarella, almonds); bolognese; meat lovers (pepperoni, salami, caramelized bacon); La Delicia (pesto, mozzarella, sun-dried tomato, serrano ham, feta, arugula, strawberry balsamic reduction); vegetable; pepperoni; chicken parmesan; and La Toscana (mozzarella, sun-dried tomato, wine-braised mushrooms, pepperoni). Availability varies, so confirm your pick when you order.

Celebration kit. For birthdays, anniversaries, or anything else worth marking. It includes the cabin decorated and a personalized sign with your message, ready when you walk in. Kit 1, COP $120,000: one pizza and a half bottle of Spanish wine. Kit 2, COP $100,000: one pizza and four fizzy drinks. Kit 3, COP $100,000: one pizza and six beers. Kit 4, COP $159,000: one pizza and a full bottle of Spanish wine.

Both kits are arranged before you arrive. The celebration kit needs more notice, since we set up the cabin before you get there.

Which cabin do you recommend?

All three are identical inside: same layout, same ofuro hot tub, same kitchen, same capacity. What changes is the forest in front of you. Abarcos faces the tallest trees; Melinas is the best one for hearing birds at dawn; Dormilones is the quietest.

What time are check-in and check-out?

Check-in is from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Check-out is by noon. The main gate closes at 8 p.m., so our team gets to rest too and you get the full disconnect. If you think you will arrive later than that, let us know ahead of time.

What is the cancellation policy?

More than 14 days ahead: full refund, or a credit good for 6 months if you prefer. Within 14 days: no refund, but the amount stays as a credit and you can transfer the booking to someone else. For a no-show or an emergency, let us know and we will look at your case. Date changes are possible up to 7 days before, subject to availability.

Can we come with children? Is there anything for them?

Yes. Each cabin sleeps two adults and three children under 12. There is forest to walk, a creek, birds, and tamarin monkeys that pass near the cabins most days. There are no screens and no scheduled activities, and that is exactly the idea.

What is there to do during the day?

Walk the forest, go down to the creek, watch birds (140 species recorded here), use the ofuro hot tub, read in the catamaran net. Piedra del Tabor and the San Carlos waterfalls are both less than 30 minutes away. There is no schedule: you set the pace.

What should I bring?

Comfortable clothes and a light layer for the evening, shoes you do not mind getting wet if you go down to the creek, insect repellent, and a swimsuit for the hot tub. The cabin has towels, linens, and everything for the bathroom. If your dog is coming, bring their bed and bowl.

Why is it called Silvery?

After the monkey. The silvery brown tamarin lives only in Colombia, and it was already here when we started, in the little forest that was left. There are more of them now, and they scatter seeds: the forest we planted is growing partly because of them. Silvery is a monkey, not an adjective.
